BPM Measurement: Principles and Practice

Typically, measurement programs have been driven as an after thought in improvement programs or organizations have had the “metrics R us” approved where more is better. Favors of the month year or decade have lots of organizations with balanced scorecards or six sigma programs that are not helping executives get deep insight into organizational performance. As BPM initiatives in organizations flourish, the consistent question survices—how are we (the organization) going to measure improvements.


This full day works will prepare attendess to face these issues from a unified strategic perspective—to improvement measurement the organization must commit to a well designed improvement strategy whose goal is to increase performance by elevating execution capability.

Session Topics-Overview
Workshop objective: participants will learn how to start or to improve existing measurement activities in a BPM initiative.  The workshop will be divided into two parts:
1) measurement principles
2) facilitated “measurement practice” discussion

In the first section, the content will cover:
• Current landscape for BPM measurement--trends and issues
• BPM Measurement Trends and Link to Strategy
• Practical frameworks for guiding measurement programs and their lifecycles
• How the maturity of business processes affects BPM measurement capability and analytics
• Where to start if you are new? How to improve if you are already involved?

 In the second section, the participants will engage in activities and group discussion designed provide for tangible outcomes, e.g. something useful to bring back home. Participants will evaluate their own preparedness for BPM measurement and develop a measurement roadmap tailored to the maturity of their business processes.

About the Instructors:

Dr. John Alden, Managing Partner, Capability Measurement
Dr. John Alden is the managing partner for Capability Measurement and a strategic business leader with deep understanding and expertise in the challenge of integrating strategy, people, process and technology to create economic value. Prior to founding Capability Measurement, Dr. Alden served as a senior research fellow at Accenture’s Institute for Strategic Change and as an Senior Executive in the Human Performance Global Service Line. In that role, he was global project lead and a co-inventor of the Accenture Human Capital Diagnostics Framework.

Dr. Bill Curtis, CEO, Enturity
Bill Curtis is a globally recognized expert in process and workforce improvement who co-authored the Capability Maturity Model, the People Capability Maturity Model, and the Business Process Maturity Model. He is currently the CEO of Enturity, a company that specializes in assisting clients in improving their enterprise maturity, and is a member of the Advisory Board of Capability Measurement, an Enturity Partner. He has been the Chief Process Officer at both McAfee and Borland Software Corporation. Until it’s acquisition by Borland he was a Co-founder and Chief Scientist of TeraQuest in Austin, Texas, the global leader in providing CMM-based services. He is a former Director of the Software Process Program in the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to joining the SEI, Dr. Curtis directed research on advanced user interface technologies and the software design process at MCC, developed a global software productivity and quality measurement system at ITT’s Programming Technology Center, evaluated software development methods in GE Space Division, and taught statistics at the University of Washington. He has published four books, over 150 articles, and is on the editorial boards of several journals. Dr. Curtis was recently elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers for his contributions to process measurement and improvement.
